Carotid artery disease

Carotid artery disease is a condition in which the carotid arteries that supply blood to the brain develop a plaque and become narrowed. This is caused by atherosclerosis or “hardening of the arteries”. When the plaque becomes severe enough it can cause a stroke. Treatment may be required when the plaque provoques blockage of 70% or more or when it causes symptoms.
